Travel through Swedish Lapland from the coast to mountains in 5 days! Discover the modern city of Luleå and visit UNESCO World Heritage, before continuing towards the mountain village of Abisko and even up to the world famous Aurora Sky Station. The distance (approx. 440km) between Luleå and Abisko you will travel by train over one of Europe’s northernmost train routes. You will cross the Arctic Circle and travel through endless forests in one of the world’s most unique landscapes. This iconic Swedish Lapland Holiday starts in Luleå, the largest city of Swedish Lapland. You will stay 2 nights in Clarion Sense Hotel, a modern and centrally located hotel right next to the Luleå harbour. Located on the coast, 150km south of the Arctic Circle. From December, Luleå  is a frozen wonderland of snow and ice trails, where you can ski, skate, walk and sled across the bay directly from the city centre. Between February and April, you can even drive your car across the ocean, with some roads even stretching all the way to the surrounding archipelago’s islands. The UNESCO World Heritage site ‘Gammelstad‘ is located inland of Luleå. The old church town is the largest and best-preserved example of a settlement once found throughout the northern Scandinavian and a must visit.
From the coastal city of Luleå, the journey proceeds into the alpine surrounding of the Abisko National Park. About 200km north of the Arctic Circle and one of the best places on earth to watch the magical Northern Lights. Here you will stay 2 nights in the STF Abisko Mountain Station. Being located within the Arctic and very frequently inside the Aurora oval means that during the winter, Abisko experiences fantastic Northern Lights displays. Here you have the possibilities to visit the Aurora Sky Station, 900 meters above sea level, which is listed in the Lonely Planet’s top 10 places of the world for Northern Lights viewing.
On arrival to Luleå Airport, you will be welcomed by one of our guides who will take you to your accommodation in the city centre. After checking in, the rest of the day is free for you to explore Luleå. You can relax, stroll the charming city, visit on of the many trendy cafe for a Swedish Fika or explore landmarks. Being the biggest city in Swedish Lapland, Luleå has 11 remarkable restaurants and cafés around the hotel are recommended in the White Guide, the Swedish guide system for Sweden’s top restaurant and cafes. Luleå also offers numerous cosy coffee houses and bars for those who want to experience the renowned Luleå nightlife. Alternative, you may join a Northern light tour in the evening. Optional: Northern Lights Tour (3 hours), SEK 950.
After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel for a guided tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Gammelstad. The best preserved church town from Sweden. Together with an authorised guide you will walk through the labyrinth of narrow streets in between the more than 400 old charming and red coloured cottages. Most of the church town is still in the same style as a few hundred years ago. There are no activities planned for the midday or evenings. If you are interested in doing activities like dog sleddingsnowmobiling or snowshoe walking we can easily arrange this for you. The surrounding of Luleå offers many possibilities to enjoy the outdoors.
Today your winter holiday continues by train to the mountain village of Abisko (train ride – direct connection, reserved seats. approx. 6h).  This unique journey across the Arctic landscape will bring you in a comfortable way far above the Arctic Circle. Upon arrival, it is about 5-min walking distance to your accommodation the STF Abisko Mountain Station. In the evening a unique night visit to the Aurora Sky Station is included.
Waking up after a good night sleep, enjoying breakfast and get ready for your next adventure! Today you can choose to spend the day on your own pace. There are different options to explore the beautiful Abisko National Park in your preferred way. You can explore the nearby surroundings on your own, rent ski’s or snowshoes which are supplied by your accommodation. Or choose to take part in a thrilling snowmobile tour, a calm ice fishing tour, or a guided snowshoe walk. You may also sit back on a sled after a snowmobile to hunt the magical northern lights in the evening!
After all experiences during this Swedish Lapland Coast to Mountains holiday it’s time to travel homewards. Maybe you have some time left to relax or do an activity in the the area But if you have an early flight then it’s time to get ready and checkout of your hotel room. You will be picked up from the lobby of the Abisko Mountain station, the transfer to Kiruna Airport takes about 1.5 hour.
