KIRUNA

Kiruna

Kiruna is a town in the northernmost part of Swedish Lapland. The mining business in Kiruna has grown since the beginning of the 20th century and today the mine is the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. The mining takes place at a level of 1365 meters as the deepest. If you want to visit the mine, you can book a guided tour and visit the mine’s vistior center at a depth of 540 meters. After cracks were discovered in the ground as a result of the mining, the decision was made to move the center of Kiruna 3 km east. The move is still ongoing.

One of the buildings that will be moved due to the mining operations is Kiruna’s unique church. The church was inaugurated in 1912 and has been voted Sweden’s most beautiful building built before 1950.

At Camp Ripan is Aurora Spa, which won “Best unique spa experience 2020” in the World Luxury Spa Awards. Camp Ripan also has activities, a hotel and a restaurant.
