Haparanda is Sweden’s easternmost town and borders the Finnish city of Tornio. Here you can try swedish, finnish and tornedalsk food culture. Some nice restaurants that use fresh and locally produced ingredients are Gulasch Baronen, Hulkoff’s, Kukkolaforsen and Seskarö Wärdshus. Kukkolaforsen is part of the Torne River, where there are good fishing opportunities. In the summer, the villagers in Kukkola fishing village pull in whitefish and wild salmon in the traditional way. Here you can also try rafting on a raft or inflatable boat.
In Haparanda is Cape East, Sweden’s easternmost spa resort. Here you can relax by visiting the spa, get a massage and facials or warm up in one of the world’s largest saunas. Cape East also holds activities such as snowmobiling and ice fishing.
Other activities you can try in Haparanda are seal safaris, climbing, kayaking, escape room, ice swimming, frisbee golf and golf. Green Zone Golf is a unique golf course located in two countries, 11 of the holes are on Swedish soil and 7 of the holes on Finnish soil. The country’s northernmost archipelago is located in Haparanda. The largest island is called Sandskär and belongs to the archipelago’s 6,000 hectare national park.
